Using your Naked
Naked works best in environments that meet the following criteria:
- Open: 6 feet x 4 feet of available floor space that can be cleared of other furniture and objects during a scan
- Dry: Free from humidity that would fog the mirror. Unfortunately, this rules out most bathrooms.
- Level: Hard floor (wood, tile, etc.) or short-pile carpet (under .5 of an inch)
- Dark: Light will not shine directly on the mirror.
- Wifi: Access to reliable home WiFi network
Overhead lights are generally okay, as long as they do not shine directly on the mirror or your body during a scan. If you have strong overhead lights (like fluorescent bulbs) or uncovered lights (like track lighting) it's best to turn them off before you scan.
We do not recommend scanning in rooms with numerous large windows unless they have shades or you plan to scan in the early morning before it is light. We do not recommend placing your scanner directly facing bright windows or directly in front of bright windows.
Fun fact: it is possible to scan in the dark!
What gets scanned gets measured, so the less clothing you wear and the tighter that clothing is the better. Though our name suggests otherwise, you do not have to scan nude – although you certainly can!
For men who aren't scanning nude, we recommend:
- Bare-chested on top
- Briefs, boxer briefs, compression shorts, or a Speedo on bottom
- Boxers or gym shorts WILL result in inaccurate body fat percentage
For women who aren't scanning nude, we recommend:
- Bra, sports bra, bikini, or nothing on top
- Underwear, bikini, boy shorts, or compression shorts on bottom
- Scanning in shorts, leggings, or a tank-top WILL result in inaccurate body fat percentage
Most importantly, try to wear the same thing consistently every time you scan (not the exact same pair of briefs, but the same style). This will really help the accuracy and consistency of your measurements and trends over time.
One last rule of thumb: no socks — they can cause your feet to get cut off in your scan.
You can leave on glasses and jewelry, just make sure you aren't wearing dangly earrings or big necklaces.
Because the circumference of your neck is used in the body fat calculation, it's important to keep hair off of your neck and shoulders during the scan. Use a bun, headband, or swim cap to pull as much hair off your neck as possible — you too, guys!
The scale is powered by a lithium-ion battery. You charge it by connecting it to the mirror using the USB-C cable stored on the underside of the scale. The USB-C port on the scale is located on the lip near the power button. The USB-C port on the mirror is located on the bottom of the mirror frame toward the right side. Once you connect the scale and mirror, flip the scale over. You should see a blinking blue light on the scale's power button to indicate it is charging. Note: the button will not blink when the scale is right side up.
The scale takes about 9 hours to charge fully (from 0% to 100%). You can check scale battery percentage by connecting to your scanner through More > Scanner Status. If you have plugged in the cable but the scale doesn't appear to be charging, check the USB-C cord for any bends in the prongs, you may have a faulty cord. If you think you have a faulty cable, please reach out to support@nakedlabs.com so we can replace it.
Technically, no! The scale will rotate 360° no matter what direction it's facing. For easiest charging, however, you can align the USB-C port on the bottom of the scale to face the mirror.
The best way to learn the pose is to watch the pose animation in the app and practice it prior to scanning. Here's are the steps:
- Make sure your clothing, hair and the room lighting are acceptable
- Step onto the scale, lining the middle of your feet up with the scale marker
- Shuffle your feet out as wide as possible without hanging off the sides
- Stand up straight, pull your shoulders back and straighten your arms
- Open your hands and extend your thumb until it touches your outer thigh
- Keep your hands that same distance from your legs, make tight fists and turn your knuckles outward
- Don't talk, move or adjust your clothing during the countdown
- During the spin breathe normally and stay as still as possible

We recommend standing in a natural posture with relaxed muscles. It's difficult to flex the same way every time, but it's much easier to relax similarly. Different flex from scan to scan can create inaccuracies in your measurements and body fat percentage. If you want to do a flexed scan in some other pose (Mr. Universe, etc.) that's totally fine — just know that it most likely won't be included in your data.
Naked processes one scan at a time - If a scan is processing, you'll have to wait until it's done to start a new scan.
First, make sure you are using the correct feet. The hard, flat feet are for hard flooring surfaces like wood, tile, laminate, concrete. The soft, pointed feet are for piled or woven carpets and rugs under .5 of an inch. If you have super plush carpet, the button of your scale may get turned off mid-scan or right when you step on. You may see an error on the app that says 'Scale Undetected.' If you think this is happening to you, you can test it by taping a business card or something similar over the button to see if that fixes the issue.
When you install the feet make sure to screw them all the way down until they stop clicking. Then, turn the scale over and use a level (pro-tip: there is a level in the native Compass app on iPhone) to see if the scale is tilted in any direction. If it is, turn the scale back over and loosen the appropriate feet by a half-turn. Turn it back over and recheck with the level. Repeat this until the scale is level.
Updates are automatically pushed over the air (OTA) so you don't ever have to worry about having outdated firmware. If you receive a notice that your firmware is out of date, please just plug your scale into the mirror and give it about 5 minutes to update. If you are still receiving the notice, please try resetting your scale by flipping the scale over and pressing the power button for 10 seconds. Then turn the scale off and on again and plug it into the mirror for 5 minutes.
Please note that you can't scan during a firmware update! Software updates to the app are pushed through the Apple App Store and Google Play store.
Every body fat technique is an estimation, not a direct measurement, so don't be surprised if you see pronounced differences between methods. Naked's measurements tend to be a little higher than most consumer scales (like FitBit Aria, Withings, and UA scales).
Our body fat measurements tend to fall closer to DXA, which is the medical grade technology generally treated as the gold standard.
